「こい」（成海璃子）は、深川の漬物屋の一人娘。自然と人目をひいてしまうのが悩みで、目立たず暮らそうとしている。ある日、江戸中の娘が競い合う「百人一首かるた腕くらべ」の開催が決定し、気乗りしない「こい」だが、「百人一首かるた」の師匠・はな（松坂慶子）から参加を勧められる。そんなとき、初詣でで出会った浪人（平岡祐太）から、「必死で何かを求めたことのない、志のない顔だ」と言われてしまう。
