Ren visits her mentor, Karn, in his hideaway before joining Dalia on their way to market. Baynon, plays a trick on her and their father, Dagron, but the game turns serious when the ruling order of the Kah'Nath arrives in Lyngarth.
Ren's father confronts her about a book she has kept hidden from him. When he discovers that the book is from Karn, they have an argument and Ren runs away. In the forest she encounters two fugitives, Lyanna and Hunter, and during a fight with Kah'Nath soldiers she's exposed to an ancient Mahri spirit.
Hunter follows Ren to her village where the spirit starts to take hold of her. He tells her that she is a Nuh'Mahri (a walker of the spirit) and that she must flee the village to avoid persecution. But the situation gets out of control when Dagron intervenes. Ren prays to Nirith, the Goddess of Light, for help but it might be too late.
Ren is put on trial for being a 'Marked One', the ancient enemy of the people of Alathia and the Kah'Nath, and only her brother works to save her. He comes up with a plan to enlist Hunter's help, but will the mercenary honour his promise when the Kah'Nath Master turns up at Ren's trial?
The Master provokes Ren to unleash her newfound powers, which strengthens the case against her. But before her death sentence can be carried out, a Knight from the ancient order of the Mahri'Rai appears to fight her corner. But can they all escape the power of the Kah'Nath, and who will be at Ren's side at the end?
Ren’s new abilities as a Nu’Mahri come shockingly to the fore as she and Hunter flee her village, and Hunter tells her about a mysterious Mahri expert called the Archivist who may be able to help her. Meanwhile the Kah’Nath Master gives Commander Othon an ultimatum.
Ren has a disturbing vision, while Hunter meets with the Archivist’s middleman. The Kah’Nath army leave no stone unturned in their search for the fugitives.
Ren and Hunter strike back against the Kah’Nath, but can Ren control her new abilities? And how far will Commander Othon go to find his quarry?
Ren discovers more about her abilities and her companion as she navigates a strange and dangerous underworld, in the season finale of the award-winning fantasy-adventure series.
Tomas Featherwell’rai, a.k.a. the Archivist, welcomes Ren to his grand but crumbling castle. Both host and guest are wary of each other, but when Tomas shows Ren the contraband contents of his secret Archive, she makes a shocking discovery and receives a tempting proposal.
Hunter continues his travels alone, carrying the burden of his deal with the Archivist and the terrible consequences it had for those around him. When a mysterious young woman steals the one good thing he got out of that deal, it sets a chain of events in motion that leads him back to old friends and old enemies too.
Ren and Tomas learn more about each other as their plans for a mutually beneficial arrangement develop. But when a Kah’Nath search party led by Commander Tharkan arrives at Featherwell Castle, Ren finds out who she can trust and who she can’t.
Hunter and his fellow renegades arrive at Helgoth, the site of a notorious uprising against the Kah’Nath. Amongst the desolate ruins, he must face up to the past he has been running from.
As the full moon rises over Featherwell Castle, Ren and Tomas prepare for their plans to be realised at last.
