In this series, we’re digging into the U.S. government’s early immigration crackdowns: from the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798, to the Chinese Exclusion Act, to raids on Mexican-American communities during the Great Depression, and finally to the infamous mass deportation campaign of 1954, Operation Wetbck.* We’ll explore the political pressures that sparked these crackdowns, how they were carried out, the resistance against them, and the consequences that still echo today.
